How to Descale a Coffee Machine and Stop Limescale Coming Back
Knowing how to descale a coffee machine matters more in Britain than in most places, because roughly 60% of the country sits on hard or very hard water and a domestic espresso machine is a small pressurised boiler that heats that water dozens of times a week. Scale does not build up gradually and harmlessly. It coats the heating element, narrows the pipework, throws the brew temperature off, and eventually blocks the machine entirely.
The good news is that descaling is straightforward. The important part is what you use, because the most commonly recommended method is the one several manufacturers explicitly refuse to cover under warranty.
Do not use vinegar
This is the single most useful thing in this guide.
White vinegar dissolves limescale, which is why it appears in every kitchen tips article. Three problems come with it:
It is slow. Vinegar takes around three and a half times longer to remove the same amount of scale as a descaler based on citric and lactic acid. In a machine with an automatic cycle that stops before the job is done, you can end up with scale still in place and a machine full of vinegar.
It attacks seals. Acetic acid degrades rubber gaskets, silicone seals and some epoxy-coated pump components over repeated use. In a machine with many small seals, this shows up as leaks months later, and the cause is not obvious at the time.
It voids warranties. Manufacturers including Rocket, ECM and La Marzocco specifically exclude damage caused by non-approved descaling agents, and vinegar is not on anyone’s approved list. Seal failure traced to vinegar is not covered.
The same objection applies, more strongly, to lemon juice, which adds sugars and pulp to the list of things you did not want inside a boiler.
Use citric acid or the manufacturer’s own descaler
Citric acid is what most commercial descaling products are built around, and major manufacturers including La Marzocco, Nuova Simonelli and Breville approve it when used at the stated concentration and dwell time. It works by chelation: the acid groups bind calcium and magnesium ions and lift the scale into solution rather than oxidising the metal underneath. It is non-volatile, rinses out completely, and leaves no smell.
The working solution is roughly 10g of food-grade citric acid per 200ml of warm water, giving about a 1:20 mix. Two rules bound it:
- Do not exceed 5% concentration. Stronger is not faster, it is just harder on the machine.
- Do not leave it dwelling in the boiler longer than about 30 minutes.
The manufacturer’s own descaler is the other safe answer, and on a machine still under warranty it is the one to use, because it removes any argument later. Check the manual first: some machines, particularly those with aluminium boilers or specific coatings, name a required product.
The method
- Empty and clean the water tank. Remove any water filter cartridge, which will otherwise absorb the descaler and be ruined.
- Mix the solution in the tank at the stated concentration, using warm rather than hot water.
- Run the machine’s descaling programme if it has one. If it does not, run roughly a third of the tank through the brew head, a third through the steam wand or hot water tap, and let it stand for fifteen to twenty minutes.
- Run the rest through, alternating outlets so the solution reaches every path.
- Rinse thoroughly. Three full tanks of fresh water through every outlet. This is the step people cut short, and residual descaler tastes unmistakable in the next coffee.
- Refit a new filter cartridge and discard the first cup.
On a bean-to-cup machine, follow the on-screen prompts exactly rather than improvising. These machines move the solution through internal valves in a set order and interrupting the cycle can leave descaler trapped in a section of pipework.
For a pump espresso machine, also remove and soak the shower screen and dispersion block separately, since scale and coffee oils accumulate there and no descaling cycle reaches them properly.
How often, based on where you live
Frequency depends almost entirely on your water hardness, which in the UK varies enormously between regions. A machine in Devon and the same machine in Essex live completely different lives.
As a working guide, for a household making a few coffees a day:
- Soft water areas: every four to six months.
- Moderately hard: every two to three months.
- Hard and very hard: every four to eight weeks.

Better than any calendar: watch the machine. Slower flow, a weaker or cooler shot, longer heat-up, more noise from the pump, or flaky white deposits in the drip tray all mean you have left it too long. A machine that has started to run slowly has scale in the pipework, not just on the element.
Stopping it coming back
Descaling treats the symptom. If you are doing it every six weeks, the water is the problem.
Filter jugs and in-tank cartridges reduce carbonate hardness and are the low-effort option. They help meaningfully and they need replacing on schedule, since an exhausted cartridge does nothing. Our filter jug comparison covers which do what.
Bottled or distilled water is a common instinct and a mistake for espresso. Water with no mineral content makes flat, hollow-tasting coffee, and some machines with conductivity-based water level sensors will not register it at all. Coffee needs some mineral content; it just needs the right kind.
A water softener removes hardness at the mains and solves the problem for every appliance in the house, not just the coffee machine. The important caveat for coffee: softened water exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium, which protects the machine completely but changes extraction, and many specialists prefer a filtered rather than fully softened supply for brewing. Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness; they alter how scale forms so it is less adherent. Results vary and they are not a substitute where scale is already severe. See salt-free water conditioners.
Whatever you choose, empty the tank between uses rather than leaving standing water in it, and dry the drip tray. Scale forms fastest where water sits and evaporates.
If it is already blocked
A machine that has stopped passing water has scale filling a passage, and a single descaling cycle may not shift it. Repeat the cycle two or three times with fresh solution rather than increasing the concentration. If it still will not flow, the blockage is likely in a solenoid valve or the boiler outlet and needs stripping down.
Do not run a blocked machine repeatedly hoping it clears. A pump running against a blockage is a pump on the way to failing.
